As some of you know, I spent the past week in Hollywood conducting research for my fifth novel which features an A-list celebrity as its protagonist. Initially, while plotting my book – and thus, my itinerary – I instinctively leaned toward high-priced, exclusive locales like Bel Air, Beverly Hills, Malibu, and Calabasas. Then I remembered something that would ultimately fuck up my plans to do brunch at The Ivy and window shop on Rodeo Drive in the glow of LA’s setting sun – I write crime novels.

Hours after arriving at LAX, I found myself on the seedier side of West Hollywood, investigating the probable haunts of the characters who would populate my novel – like Joe, my protagonist’s estranged father, who wouldn’t be found sunning by the pool at the Beverly Hills Hotel but rather at a pawnshop on Crenshaw, swapping a stolen gun for a pocketful of singles which he’d immediately take north to the Sunset Strip to procure lap dances at the Body Shop, Crazy Girls, or the Seventh Veil.
